Market Day in Toulon

If you’re looking to get a flair for multi-cultural Provence, look no further than a morning spent wandering through the main market of Toulon. Among the sellers pushing their artichokes, olives, and tapenades in the twangy accent of the South, you’ll find a mix of new & long-standing immigrants doing their daily shopping. Make sure to take a walk to the top of the market for a large & well-priced selection of flowers.

Where:

Cour Lafayette, center of Toulon

When:

Open early morning to about mid-day Tuesday to Sunday.

What:

Large Provencal market selling seasonal produce, regional specialties, and some textiles.

Special Interest:

Hop across the busy Avenue de la Republique for a coffee or verre du vin portside and watch the fishermen bringing in the catch of the day. Or take a guided-tour boat ride to learn more about the history of France’s principal naval port & its active role in World War II. Boat tours are also available to the nearby islands of Hyeres – numerous operators with prices starting at 10 Euros for adults, 5 Euros for children.

Have not made it to Toulon, will have to put it on my list of towns/villages to visit, especially on a market day.

I’ve wanted to visit Toulon every since reading about it in Les Miserables. 🙂 Funny how names stick in your mind sometimes. 🙂

  True it’s famous for many things – mainly the naval port & role in WWII, but also been featured in several books.
