She’s done it again! I’ve loved getting to know Gayle Smith Padgett over the years and have especially appreciated her writings about Provence and life in France – which are always full of wit, humor, and delightful anecdotes.
Her newest book, Pleasures of Provence: A Quest for the Secret to Joie de Vivre in La Belle France is a welcome addition to her other works – Passion for Provence and the Birdwatcher’s Wife.
I always see so much of my own experiences in her writings, and her lastest work is no exception.
The book follows Gayle and adorable hubby Ralph as they build a life in Saint Rémy de Provence. When their beloved belle vie is threatened by an encounter with the law, Gayle begins searching for a way to understand and preserve the qualities that make their French lifestyle so special.
Her journey leads to adventures involving boats, bicycles, hiking, markets, food, and explorations of different regions of France. Along the way, readers get a glimpse into French customs and culture, as well as the differences between French and American ways of living.
All with Gayle’s characteristic good humor and positivity, and Ralph’s unflappable devotion to his wife. They make an adorable couple.
One of the aspects of the book that I appreciated the most is the idea of joie de vivre – the enjoyment of life. Rather than presenting happiness as something complicated, Gayle explores simple principles that can make everyday life more meaningful. The book suggests that enjoying good food, spending time with others, appreciating beautiful surroundings, and being open to new experiences can all contribute to a happier life.
I hope you enjoy the Pleasures of Provence as much as I did, and if you happen to be in Saint Rémy de Provence on Saturday, August 29th, Gayle will be singing books from 10am to 12:30pm at Saint Rémy Presse.
